Abstract. The possible origin of the low voltage cable PE insulation cracking  is considered, the cable  has been 5 years in operation. The analytical methods used are as follows: DSC,FTIR, visual light microscopy, photomicrography, and photomacrography. In addition, insulated conductors were tested in surface- active substance  at elevated temperature. The data obtained permit to conclude that neither oxidation, nor rearrangement of supramolecular structure are responsible for premature failure. It is concluded that installation work is the only reason of the damage. The residual life time estimation, based on cracking criteria, equals to 40 years.

Key words: PE insulation, crack, DSC, FTIR,  visual microscopy,  photomicrography, photo-macrography, oxidation, recrystallization.

A.S. Zalogin, Cand. Sc. (Engineering), General Director of Ltd. “NANIO CCVE”;

A.V. Lobanov, Cand. Sc. (Engineering), General Director of Ltd. “NPP “Spetskabel”;

A.P. Porshina, Engineer, Ltd. “NANIO CCVE”

Abstract. The formula for calculating the risk of damage caused by an explosion of gas or dust atmosphere in hazardous areas at industrial sites has been examined. The analysis of international electrotechnical vocabularies and regulatory documentation relating to electrical equipment for explosive atmospheres has demonstrated that by assessing the risk of explosion in hazardous areas of industrial production sites, it is important to consider the likelihood of explosions of gas or dust atmospheres caused by electrical cables for external electrical circuits. The physical basis of explosive atmospheres ignition probability during the operation of cables for external electrical circuits has been analyzed and the formula for calculating the risk of damage caused by explosion of gas or dust atmospheres in hazardous areas at industrial sites has been revised, taking into account the probability of an explosion caused by electrical cables for external electrical circuits.

Key words: risk, probability, explosive atmosphere, explosion initiation, electrical cables for external electrical circuits, exhaustive events.
