Trends of polymer materials use in cable industry


Dynamics of basic electric insulating materials consumption by the Electrocable Association companies in 2004 – 2012 is shown. There was a change in the pattern of consumption for all material groups. The share of fire performance PVC compounds, cross-linked polyethylene, halogen-free compounds, enamel varnishes with a temperature index of 180-220 was increased.

Copper conductor telecommunication cables. Current state and prospects of production development


The development of telecommunication technologies leads to the change of the communication cable production pattern. During the period of 2008 – 2012 the production volume of telephone cable was reduced more than twice and the output of LAN cable almost doubled. The designing principles for LAN cable and broadband network access cable are described. Quality data of imported LAN cables available on the Ukrainian market are given.

Use of silane cross-linked polyethylene for insulating MV power cables

The paper presents the results of comparative investigations of insulations for medium voltage cables based on peroxide and silane cross-linked low density polyethylene. Experimental data obtained on specimens in the form of plates and films, as well as on full-size cable specimens are analyzed. Breakdown strength, thermal ageing resistance and resistance to water and electrical treeing are evaluated. The investigations confirm the applicability of silane cross-linked polyethylene cables for voltages up to 10 kV. Decision about the use of this cross-linking technology for manufacturing 20 kV and 35 kV cables may be taken after further investigations and tests are carried out.

Quality control in the production of conductors for the ITER magnet system

The paper is devoted to the multistage quality control system in the production of superconducting cables and conductors intended for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). The cable and conductor design for superconducting toroidal and poloidal field coils is described. The quality control of raw material and components is conducted. The bar and finished product dimensions are checked at each production stage. Physical and chemical parameters of the cable and its design elements are inspected by way of destructive testing of short specimens taken from every manufactured length. The quality control results are entered into the “cable chart” and the international database.

Estimation procedure for temperature dependence of electrical resistance of wires based on resistance alloys


The authors analyze the standard procedure for estimating the parameters that determine the temperature dependence of electrical resistance of wires based on resistance alloys. It is proved that the parameter estimates obtained by this procedure depend on an arbitrary choice of the initial reference temperature and that is why they are not physical constants of the wire material. An alternative procedure for estimating physical parameters determining the temperature dependence of electrical resistance for a nonlinear case is offered.
