A comparative analysis of the dielectric properties and the electrochemical ageing resistance of MV cable EPR- and XLPE-based insulating systems

Abstract
The electrical properties of EPR and XLPE insulations are compared step by step. Rogowski cups as well as full-scale MV cable samples are used as test objects. The EPR dielectric strength appeared to be 1.5 times lower than that of XLPE. It is limited by the same microscopic defects: semicon screen protrusions into insulation, foreign particles. Electrical breakdown of EPR is preceded by electrical treeing. Dielectric losses of EPR are considerably higher and cause thermal breakdown during electrical tests. Three methods are described for water tree disclosure together with the methods of microspectral analysis, which permit to measure the degree of electrochemical degradation inside water trees, developed by the authors.
It is concluded that EPR-insulated MV cables can occupy a worthy place in Russian cable market provided their quality and reliability are confirmed by all necessary tests.

About the adhesion of the insulation of enameled wires with different temperature index

Abstract
The change in the insulating coating adhesion to the copper conductor under the long-term exposure to a temperature within the range up to and above the temperature index of the tested enamel varnish is studied. With an enameled wire having a double-layer insulation of modified polyesterimide and polyamideimide varnishes as an example it is shown that the adhesion value may be used as a parameter determining the temperature index.

Copper cable scrap is raw stock for the production of permeable fibrous materials by powder metallurgy methods

Abstract
The properties of recycled copper cable scrap were investigated. Its grain size distribution was determined. For each separated fraction the types of structure elements were defined and the dimensions (diameters and lengths) were measured.
The packed density bulk density, tapped density and microhardness values were established.

About the necessity of developing standards for cable polymer compounds

Abstract
The article gives a brief analysis of the current state in the field of standardization of cable plastics in Russia. It is stated that there is a significant lag in this area relative to the real technical level and range of materials used. The urgent need to develop a new national standard by adapting the European approach to the construction of standards for cable materials on a standard basis to the real situation in the Russian cable industry is emphasized.

On the responsibility for the production and supply of counterfeit products. International practice

Abstract
The paper describes the activities carried out to detect counterfeit products within the framework of the “Cable without danger” project. The international practice of combating the suppliers of counterfeit and substandard cable products is illustrated by the example of the situation in the metro system of Xian (China) and the subsequent reaction of the governmental authorities.
