History of creation and development of the All-Russian Scientific Research and Development Cable Institute

Abstract
The paper gives a brief review of the history of creation of the cable industry of Russia and the USSR before the All-Russian Scientific Research and Development Cable Institute (VNIIKP) was set up. The author provides an insight into the history of the Institute development, establishment of its branches and later on the formation of a research and production facility on the basis of VNIIKP. The main areas of the current Institute research and technical activities are outlined: high-voltage power cables; low flammable cables for all applications; telecommunication cables, including fiber optic cables; heat-resistant winding wires; shipboard cables; cables for oil industry; superconducting cables, etc. Special consideration is given to the VNIIKP activities in the field of development of manufacturing technologies, in particular the radiation modification (irradiation) technology and complete processing lines combining several production operations. It is noted that VNIIKP created the first national medical tomographic scanner.

VNIIKP today and tomorrow: primary targets and future development

Abstract
The paper summarizes the results of JSC VNIIKP recent activities. In spite of the challenges of the 90-s the Institute proved able to retain its staff members and scientific capability. The Institute keeps on its intense development along with the home cable industry. Large-scale scientific-research and experimental development activities are being carried out. The academic council and the post-graduate courses are working successfully. Major investment projects are being implemented. Small-lot production of field cable and winding wire has been launched, a pilot production facility has been commissioned to develop and manufacture superconducting cables. High-voltage test and fire performance test centers have been built and commissioned, as well as a new laboratory for high-voltage cable, insulation system diagnostics and investigation.

Medium and high voltage cables as power grid arteries

Abstract
The history of the development of XLPE-insulated MV and HV cables production in Russia is briefly presented. The methods and experience of wet ageing (water treeing) tests are described both for insulating materials and for MV cables. It is shown that ethylene-propylene rubber-based insulation is susceptible to water treeing. The test method is described, aimed at evaluation of the long-term electrical treeing resistance, i.e. «life curve» for the HV XLPE-based insulating materials. These methods are original; in 2015 Russian Academy of Sciences rewarded the Institute with the Yablochkov prize for the development and application of the system of microscopic methods of MV and HV cable insulation tests.New cable designs are considered including that of MV cable with sector-shaped conductor and fire-retardant HV cable.The Institute carries out a large-scale studies aimed at evaluation of the reasons of cable and cable accessories failures during commercial operation, as well as type and prequalification tests of HV cables and accessories according to the IEC standards.

Current trends of cable and wire fire performance

Abstract
The paper deals with the development of research for fire performance evaluation of cable and wire. Analyzing the Russian and international experience in cable and wire production and the regulatory system for cable application currently in force, the authors show the advantages of the introduction of the fire performance cable classification system based on the norms of Regulation EC № 305/2011.
The cable classification criteria should be defined by way of cable testing in a chamber as per IEC 60332-3-10, combined with the test equipment used to measure the fire performance characteristics similar to the cone calorimeter method. It is emphasized that the cone calorimeter method should be used to measure the parameters characterizing the fire behaviour of polymer compounds. It is shown that these parameters can be used to evaluate the flame retardant characteristics of cables at the design stage.

Optical cables are the basis for present-day telecommunication networks and local communication systems

Abstract
The paper analyses the development of optical cables and optical fibers from the time of their appearance in the middle of the last century up to the present days and reviews the contribution of VNIIKP to the development of this technical field. A brief description of the basic technology solutions facilitating the creation of high performance optical cable designs is given. The results of several recent developments are presented, including 2 and 3 class safety optical cables for NPP, and a short analysis of the applicable regulatory documents for optical cables and optical fibers is given. The directions of further development are discussed.

Copper conductor communication cables. The present and the future

Abstract
TThe paper is dedicated to the most important Institute activities in the field of development and production of communication cables for various applications, cables for signal and block systems, control cables and sealed hybrid cables.
It is shown that following the development of communication systems and the extension of operating frequency range the Institute carried out extensive work aimed at improving the communication cable designs and production technologies with the use of new materials.
It is noted that the introduction of new materials and commissioning of new communication cable designs took place at the same time as the new equipment and new technologies were introduced at several cable plants.
The paper gives much attention to the problems of standardization, quality improvement, operation reliability and serviceability of communication cables in various purpose communication cable lines.

Progress in the field of rubbers for the national cable industry

Abstract
The paper provides an insight into the progress in the field of development and introduction of domestic cable rubbers over the past 70 years. A qualitative and quantitative analysis of the consumed cable rubbers is given, and the redistribution of grade composition of the consumed rubbers is forecasted. The recent Institute developments of cable rubbers are presented.For the first time the authors demonstrate a layout of the unit used to test the strength of the ceramic forming layer of the siloxane rubbers intended for fire-resistant wire insulation.

Research and development in the field of cable and wire for specific applications

Abstract
The paper gives a review of special cables, such as shipboard cable and cable and wire for rail transport rolling stock. Consideration is given to the history of development of special cable and wire designs and the specific features of operation to be taken into account in the designing are indicated. Promising directions of development of shipboard cable and cable and wire for rail transport rolling stock are discussed. The necessity of regulatory documentation harmonization with the international standards is highlighted.

Winding wires. Current state and prospects for further development

Abstract
The paper gives a review of the current state of winding wire production in Russia and the role of VNIIKP in this process. The ways for winding wire improvement are shown. The primary directions are associated with the improvement of wire performance and import substitution.

Superconducting cables and not just those

Abstract
The paper is dedicated to the history and the current state of the activities for creating superconducting cable and wire that have been carried out in VNIIKP over the past few years. The primary task in this field is concerned with the development, research, testing and production of combinations of original superconductors in the form of high-power current-carrying elements or cables with currents of tens of kiloamperes. Some types of the developed and manufactured superconducting current-carrying elements and the accomplished projects are presented. The Institute participation in the international ITER project and the production facilities built for this purpose are described. The developments of modern high-temperature superconductor based cables for energy, shipboard and aircraft applications, as well as other recent developments, particularly hydrogen-superconductor technologies, are demonstrated.
