Gennady Ivanovich Meshchanov was born on June 11, 1940. In 1963 he graduated from the Moscow Power Engineering Institute with a degree in Electrical Insulation and Cable Engineering. Since 1963, he has been working at the All-Russian Research Institute of the Cable Industry (JSC "VNIIKP"). From 1972 to 2003 he was Deputy Director General, and from 2003 to the present he is the Director General of the Institute. For more than 10 years, he combined work at JSC VNIIKP with teaching, being a professor at the Moscow Power Engineering Institute. In 2012, he defended his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences on the topic "Research and development of cables and wires for extreme operating conditions and their production technology".

Meshchanov G.I. is a well–known scientist who has made a significant contribution to the development of electrical insulation and cable science and technology.

He carried out major works on the creation of heat-resistant winding wires for electric motors of submersible pumps of oil production; developed an original technology of high-frequency heating and sintering of film insulation of such wires, on the basis of which serial production was organized. He personally and under his scientific supervision carried out a complex of studies in the field of cable products used in nuclear energy. Under his leadership, a wide range of cables that do not spread gorenje and are fire-resistant has been developed and put into mass production for use at nuclear power facilities, in the subway, airports, high-rise buildings and other facilities characterized by a mass gathering of people. This work was awarded the prize of the Russian Government in the field of science and technology in 2011. Currently, he heads a complex of works on the creation of domestic production of materials and components for the manufacture of optical cables.

He has 49 patents for inventions and utility models. He has published more than 200 printed works. In the editorial board of the journal, he serves as deputy editor-in-chief, and also conducts topics on fireproof cable products.

He has government awards. Laureate of the prizes of the Council of Ministers of the USSR and the Government of Russia in the field of science and technology. First Vice-President of the Academy of Electrotechnical Sciences of the Russian Federation; full member of the Engineering Academy of the Russian Federation.
